The Northern Track And Field League is a four-match league containing 6-club teams male and female covering all the events except the 10000m in the track and field competition roster. South Shields Harriers are composited with Birtley Athletics Club as when we applied to re-join the league some four years ago we could only do so by combining with an already competing team as no spare places were available so we were paired with Birtley.

The events Male athletes compete in are; 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 5000, 110mH, 400H, 3000SC, Shot, Discus, Hammer, Javelin, Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump and Pole Vault with two relays 4 x 100 and 4 x 400.

Female athletes compete in, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000, 100mH, 400H, Shot. Discus. Hammer, Javelin, Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump and Pole Vault with 4 x 100 and 4 x 400

All teams can have 2 athletes per event A and B with the A athlete scoring better than the B (i.e. A winner receives 9 points whilst B athlete 7).

Whilst the matches are technically Senior Matches there is an allowance to field U/17 athletes but restricted to max distance of 1500m for male and 1500m female and not Pole Vault for M & F.

South Shields/Birtley are in Div. 3E along with Durham, Wallsend/Blyth, Houghton, Middlesbrough &Cleveland/Hartlepool BRH, New Marske and ourselves.

The match dates are two Saturdays and two Sundays 5 May, 9 June, 7 July and 3 August all starting 1100 – Venues are yet to be confirmed.

Last season we were initially relegated to Div. 4E but with Scarborough AC pulling out of the league we thus stayed in Div. 3E and may aim for 2013 is to consolidate our Div. 3 status and if possible push for promotion to Div. 2.

Teams are (in an ideal world evenly split between us and Birtley but that is not always possible. – As team manager I will be contacting athletes around mid April for competition selection.

For Juniors in Track and Field there is the Open North East Grand Prix (NEGP) at Monkton once a month. This is open to all athletes from U-13 to vets. We also encourage atheltes to compete in the North East Championships at Gateshead.

South Sheilds Harriers competed for many years in the North East Section of the UK Young Athletes League. This has since been disbanded and we will competing in the North East Young Athletes League starting 2013. The league is still to be decided and fixtures will be updated when available. The league covers three age groups – U-13, U-15 and U-17s covering all athletes from 11 to 19 years old. There are four league meetings once a month. Events include the 75m Hurdles and 80m sprint up to 1500m and all the field events.

In the Winter months the club competes in the Start Fitness North East Harrier Cross Country League comprising of 6 league meetings, as well as 4 other meetings. These are our very own Sherman Cup/Davidson Cup race at Temple Park, The North-Eastern Cross Country Championships, The Northern Cross Country Championships and the English National Cross Country Championships. All meetings have junior races for U-13, U-15, U-17 and U-20 races. At most of the Harrier League meetings there is a 1km U-11 race.
